Description
Volkameria aculeata (also called Prickly volkameria, among many other common names) is a species of tree native to tropical Asia. It is a medium-sized tree, growing up to 15 m tall with a trunk up to 50 cm in diameter. It is found in lowland rainforest and coastal areas.
Uses & Benefits
Volkameria aculeata is used as an ornamental plant, as a source of timber and for its medicinal properties. It has been used to treat fever, malaria, and other ailments.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
Volkameria aculeata has small, yellowish-white flowers with four petals and four sepals. The flowers are arranged in clusters, which are borne on the ends of the branches. The seeds are small, black, and triangular in shape. The seedlings have a single pair of opposite leaves, which are triangular in shape and have toothed margins.
Cultivation and Propagation
Volkameria aculeata is a small evergreen shrub, growing up to 2 m tall. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Propagation is best done by cuttings in spring or early summer. Take cuttings of around 10 cm long from the tips of the stems and remove the lower leaves. Plant the cuttings in a pot filled with a mixture of equal parts of peat and sand and keep them in a warm and humid environment.
