Description
Vicia guyotii (also called 'Guyot's Vetch', among many other common names) is an annual herb, native to East Asia. It has a slender stem and grows up to 0.5 m tall. It has pinnately compound leaves and small, purple flowers. It is found in grasslands, open woodlands and disturbed areas.
Flower, Seeds and Seedlings
The flower of Vicia guyotii is a small, purple flower with five petals. The seed is a small, black, bean-like seed. The seedlings are small, delicate and have a single, purple flower.
Cultivation and Propagation
Vicia guyotii can be propagated by seed. Seeds should be sown in the spring or early summer in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer. Division in spring or autumn is also possible. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the spring.
