Description
Carex herbacoeli (also called Herbaceous Sedge, among many other common names) is a perennial, evergreen, clump-forming sedge native to the temperate forests of Japan. It has long, slender, arching culms with small, lanceolate leaves and small, yellowish-green flowers. It typically grows in moist, shady places and is found in the wild in the mountains of central and northern Japan.

Carex herbacoeli is used as a food source for many species of fish and amphibians. It is also used in aquariums as a decorative plant, as it is easy to care for and can provide shelter for fish and other aquatic creatures.
Cultivation and Propagation
Carex herbacoeli is a clumping grass that can be propagated by division of the clumps. It prefers moist, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate temperatures down to -10°C (14°F) and can be grown in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11.
