The scientific name for cocoa, when loosely translated, means “food for the gods.” Cocoa is genuinely a food for the goods since it is from the plant; we derive foods such as chocolates. Cameroon cocoa beans farming plays a vital role in Cameroon’s economy, with estimates showing many of rural Cameroonians depend on the crop for an income. 

The cocoa tree produces cocoa beans as the seeds of the plant. The tree grows to a height of four to eight meters, and it has unlobed leaves, which can measure up to 40 centimeters long. A cocoa tree yields between twenty to thirty pods annually and it takes about three to four years to reach maturity.

The cacao plant or cocoa has its origin in the Amazon basin, and the plant has been cultivated for more than 4000 years. 

The first contact of cocoa in Cameroon happened back in 1892. In Cameroon, cocoa plantations are mainly found along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and in the southwest region. 

In 2018 Cameroon produced about 290,000 tons of cocoa beans, which accounts for about 5.5% of all the cocoa beans produced worldwide. This production had a net value of around $490 million. 

The main varieties of Cocoa beans are:

  • Crillo
  • Trinitario

The trinitario array is a hybrid mix of Forastero and Crillo. The Forastero variety is the most preferred in Cameroon due to the high quality of cocoa beans it produces. 

The season for Cameroon cocoa beans runs from August to July. The peak season is experienced from October to January. 

The cocoa growing areas in Cameroon are characterized by an altitude of an average of 400 meters above sea level and temperatures between 22°C and 29°C. Rainfall, which is the primary determinant in the amount of yield produced, areas range from 1500mm and 2000mm annually. 

Cocoa grows on the branch of the plant, which makes it easier when harvesting. Harvesting is done by hand to protect the cocoa beans. The beans are processed further, and sun-dried. The cocoa beans are then packaged in gunny bags, which are loaded in the standard containers for export. 

The main export markets for Cameroon cocoa beans are countries such as the Netherlands, the USA, and Germany.
